About the event
Baboon management: A case study in the complex relationship between science, social media, politics and power
Prof. Justin O'Riain
Franschhoek Theatre, 29 October, 18:30
The polemics associated with the management of the Peninsula baboons is not unique. Rather it reflects a global trend in which the management of human-wildlife interactions in anthropogenic landscapes is exposing divisions in human values and beliefs that are first amplified, and then polarised through social media. From a bear called JJ4 in Italy to a baboon named Fred in Cape Town, this talk will reflect on the necessity of managing wildlife in a human-transformed world, while highlighting the friction between science, social media, politics and power.
