About the event
Cape of Fire: Unravelling the Complexity of Wildfires in a Modern Society
Dr Brian du Preez
Weds 29 April, 18:30, Franschhoek Theatre
Fires have driven ecosystems across the world for millenia. Many habitats and species - including the fynbos biome - would not exist without fires. Fire is a critical process that facilitates nutrient cycling and acts as a disturbance in climax plant communities, allowing geophytes and smaller shrubs to regenerate and reproduce before going dormant again. Unfortunately, many see fire only as a destructive force, and fire suppression is widely implemented, especially on the urban edge. Given the rampant spread of alien invasive species, an increase in human-induced fires and poor fire management, the Cape is facing a new storm: a fire storm.
