De Hoop for Penguins: Re-establishing an African penguin colony
Christina Hagen (BirdLife South Africa)
29 July, 18:30
Franschhoek Theatre
In response to dramatically decreasing African penguin numbers, BirdLife South Africa initiated an ambitious project to re-establish the previously short-lived penguin colony at De Hoop Nature Reserve. Partnering with CapeNature and SANCCOB, work started in 2018. The first penguins arrived in 2022 and began breeding, and despite some challenges, penguins are still breeding there four years later. BirdLife SA's Christina Hagen will share how this happened, the latest updates from the colony, and give insights into the day-to-day work and monitoring of the colony.
