Overexploitation of marine resources, nutrient pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change are steadily degrading global marine ecosystems. Monitoring the impact of human activities is severely restricted by the vast geographic scale, extreme environmental conditions, and prohibitive research costs. To overcome these barriers, researchers are increasingly using marine top predators, such as whales, sharks, seabirds, and seals, as mobile research platforms. Because apex predators possess extensive migratory ranges and occupy high trophic positions, they are valuable sentinels of ecosystem change.
