About the event

Propaganda in Ancient Rome

Dr Ursula Westwood

31 July, Franschhoek Theatre, 18:30

We might think of propaganda as a modern phenomenon. But 2,000 years ago, the Ancient Roman emperors were also trying to manipulate public opinion. For instance, Augustus pretended that a rival faction in a civil war were actually foreign invaders, and claimed that the republican system had been restored when he was actually the sole ruler.

Join Dr Ursula Westwood from the SU Department of Ancient Studies, as she uncovers the fascinating world of Roman propaganda through coins, monuments and literature - as well as the countering of such propaganda by the historian Flavius Josephus.
