South Africa: World Capital of Tree Invasions

Roughly a third of South Africa's nearly 760 naturalized plant taxa are alien trees, earning it the title "world capital of tree invasions". How did a landscape naturally defined by open, tree-poor ecosystems become transformed by dense non-native forests? This presentation will explore the ecological mechanisms, historical pathways, and societal dynamics that drove this phenomenon. The problem has inspired world-leading management innovations, most prominently the national Working for Water programme, which couples catchment clearing with rural job creation and poverty relief. Nevertheless, tree invasions remain classic "wicked problems" embedded in intense conflicts of interest.
