The Woodpecker Mystery: The Inevitability of the Improbable
Nick Norman
Thurs 5 March 2026, 18:30
Helderberg Nature Reserve Environmental Education Centre
While working in Brazil, geologist and birder Nick Norman encountered a woodpecker strikingly similar to those from South Africa. When the idea of a shared Gondwanan ancestry was questioned, it prompted further investigation. Subsequent encounters with familiar African plant families across South America raised a central question: how did the same flora and fauna come to inhabit continents now separated by the South Atlantic?
Drawing on geology, biogeography, and remarkable natural history accounts, this talk explores a compelling scientific puzzle. Inspired by Sherlock Holmes’s dictum - that once the impossible is eliminated, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth - Norman reveals extraordinary journeys of trees and birds for which even a great ocean proved no barrier.
