About the event

Wasps: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful

Dr Simon van Noort

Thurs 13 August, Welcome Glen Farmhouse

Wasps are often feared for their painful stings, but play vital ecological roles. They are important pollinators ensuring agricultural productivity and the richness of our floral species. As parasitoids and predators, they control insect populations, including pests that impact our food crops. However, several species are invasive, disrupting local ecosystems. The diversity of colours and physical forms displayed by wasps is astonishing. Dr Simon van Noort will showcase the ecological value and intrinsic beauty of this often-misaligned group of insects, and explain why natural history museums are essential in documenting and protecting our rich insect diversity in the midst of the biodiversity crisis.
