A successful inaugural lecture sets the tone for future talks
The SmallTalX public lecture series has been introduced as an initiative to bring experts in various fields to public forums, aiming to educate curious audiences on topics mostly nature, science, conservation, amongst other domains. This project is intended to enhance our appreciation of coexistence with other living beings and encourage us to change our perspectives and behaviours to live more sustainably and harmoniously within the ecosystems around us. Welcome!
The inaugural SmallTalX event was a great success, with Dr Sara Andreotti presenting on the topic of Great White Sharks at the Franschhoek Theatre on 18 October 2023.

Dr. Andreotti discussed the subjects of Great White Sharks, their behaviour, and their conservation status. She also explained the innovation she is helping to implement—the SharkSafe Barrier. This initiative aims to aid global shark conservation by using electromagnetic barriers instead of beach nets to protect humans from sharks, an occurrence that is already rare.

Her presentation was succeeded by an engaging Q&A session, offering the audience a wonderful learning opportunity, clearing up their misunderstandings about sharks, and sparking their curiosity.

And, of course, in fulfilling the promise of snacks and wine, a lovely atmosphere ensued following Dr Andreotti's talk, where guests were able to enjoy refreshments and continue conversation.

The Bolander helped showcase this talk, highlighting the details in advance here.
It is with great excitement that SmallTalX plots the next talk, excited about welcoming an audience full of curiosity and ready to engage with yet another subject matter expert - this time on the topic of Radio Astronomy with Sarah Buchner, Science Operations Lead at the MeerKAT Radio Telescope, scheduled for November 2023.
