Georgina's Underwater World is Back (at GBYC)

18 Sept 2025

Georgina's incredible photography captures just some of the biodiversity she speaks of in False Bay's depths

On September 18, 2025, Georgina Jones, a marine life expert with the Southern Underwater Research Group and an underwater photographer, showcased the marine diversity of the False Bay and Cape Peninsula waters to an audience at Gordon's Bay Yacht Club (GBYC). Her presentation serves as both a visual delight and an inspiration to cultivate curiosity about this extraordinary marine diversity.

In the lead-up to her talk, The Bolander featured this article to publicise it.

It is fitting that her talk should be against the colourful backdrop of GYBC's sunset view, as her presentation is a feast of colours, as she illuminates the underwater world of weird and wonderful creatures living in the False Bay's waters, describing the array of fishes, cephalopods, echinoderms, nudibranchs, and more. She describes their adaptive traits, behaviours, and symbiotic relationships, along with a variety of fascinating facts that will surely inspire you to dive in and see for yourself - or simply explore the rock pools accessible to beachgoers, already teeming with vibrant life.

Her personal expertise lies in the topic of sea slugs, or nudibranchs as they are more formally characterised. She has catalogued what can only be described as a sea slug bible, having discovered and described a number of new species. So foreign to us, and so kaleidoscopic, her field guide explores their multiplicity: cataloging 868 different species of sea slugs. Furthermore, her comprehensive guide, 'A field guide to the Marine Animals of the Cape Peninsula', provides an outstanding introduction to the marine life of the peninsula.
