Esteemed shark researcher Dr. Alessandro De Maddalena is scheduled to deliver a presentation at the Franschhoek Theatre on Wednesday, 26 November, at 18:30, as a segment of the SmallTalX® series.


Join De Maddalena, the founder of the Shark Museum, for an unforgettable journey into the world of one of the ocean's most intriguing predators — the great white shark. His 90-minute presentation, featuring more than 15 years of stunning photography from expeditions in False Bay, Gansbaai, and Mossel Bay, explores the biology, hunting strategies, and field behavior of these top predators. The discussion will also cover their interactions with humans, the impact of ecotourism, and the increasing threats to their survival.


Alessandro De Maddalena, M.Sc., is a renowned shark researcher, lecturer, illustrator, and author. Previously an Adjunct Professor of Vertebrate Zoology, he has conducted over 60 expeditions to study sharks and orcas. He has authored 21 books and more than 100 articles on shark biology, and has presented over 200 lectures at universities, museums, and diving clubs across 18 countries. His work seamlessly blends scientific precision with a deep-rooted passion for ocean conservation and public education.


SmallTalX® is a public initiative focused on science and culture, designed to connect experts with inquisitive individuals in intimate environments to delve into intriguing subjects related to science, nature, art, and society. Emphasising the enhancement of ecological awareness and the promotion of conservation efforts by our naturalists and scientists, SmallTalX® aims to foster curiosity and concern for the natural world.


Tickets cost R250, which includes a glass of wine, snacks, and a Q&A session with the speaker. Booking is necessary due to limited seating.
