Who We Are: SmallTalX®
At SmallTalX®, we believe that real change begins with awareness - with a shift in how we see ourselves in relation to the natural world. Our goal is simple yet profound: to inspire ecological literacy, compassion, and connection through conversation.
Each month, we host expert-led talks across the Cape - at the Franschhoek Theatre, Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club, and in the Deep South - bringing together scientists, storytellers, artists, and explorers who help us see the living systems we are part of. Whether it’s about sharks and marine ecology, the fire-adapted magic of fynbos, caracals on the Cape Peninsula, or the hidden microbial life beneath our feet, every talk offers a chance to rediscover the wonder, complexity, and fragility of the world around us.
Our ethos is rooted in interconnectedness. We recognise that climate change, biodiversity loss, and soil degradation are not isolated crises - they are reflections of how we perceive and interact with the Earth. As thinkers like Aldo Leopold, Fritjof Capra, and Joanna Macy remind us, sustainability is not a checklist but a mindset: a way of being in relationship with the web of life.
At SmallTalX®, we see knowledge as a living process - something that grows through dialogue, curiosity, and reflection. Our talks invite people to pause, listen, and engage: to explore new scientific frontiers while also deepening their sense of place and participation in nature.
But we are more than a lecture series. We are a community - a growing network of people who care deeply about learning from nature, protecting what sustains us, and translating insight into everyday action. Whether it’s planting a waterwise garden, choosing local foods, or rethinking how we coexist with wildlife, each small step matters.
By connecting science, philosophy, and practical wisdom, SmallTalX® aims to rekindle the sense of wonder that leads to care. Because the more we understand how everything is connected, the more likely we are to protect it.
Join us - for a talk, a conversation, or a moment of curiosity - and be part of a movement that’s reimagining how we live with the natural world, one SmallTalX® at a time.
